Residence AVINDO focuses on the promotion and promotion of talents in the Roma community, especially in the field of visual arts. Despite a significant shift in the institutionalization of Romani art, thanks to the creation of ERIAC (European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture), Romani art is still often identified only with traditional Romani music. This stereotype persists both in the majority culture and, to some extent, in the Roma community itself.
Roma, like members of any other human community, abound in a diversity of talents. In the political atmosphere of the 1990s, the program of the Romani political movement concentrated on the most urgent tasks. However, after thirty years, it is high time to rethink this programme and to start addressing the representation of Roma in professional art as well.
The AVINDO Residence aims not only to support Roma artists, but also art historians, critics, curators and theorists. These professionals should become part of the mainstream art system while using their critical skills to reform it. This residency is a step towards achieving this goal and broadening awareness of the diversity of Romani art.
