Hybrid Sessions is a monthly series at Kampus Hybernská. We feature an opening improvised duo set with two musicians coming from different backgrounds to form a new constellation. Afterwards, we host a jam session open to all musicians, regardless of background. We want to create an open environment where musicians feel free to be creative in the moment, nothing is predetermined and the only expectation is a high level of presence.
A basic backline will be provided.
This time Leo Chang (amplified gongs, electronics, voice, piri) and Petr Tichý (bass).
Leo Chang
Leo is a Korean experimental musician, improviser, composer and sound artist based in New York City. Informed by his transient lived experience, Leo plays with sounds, instruments, forms, and social practices outside of their original context. He does so through electronic sound processing and sound design, performance, individual and group improvisation, graphic notation, and textual scores. For the past six years, he has focused on building electronic assemblages derived from Korean folk practices and instruments. For example, he has built an instrument where he amplifies Korean gongs (historically used in folk, shamanic, and court music) with transducers and resonates them with his voice, microphone feedback, and other processed audio input.
Petr Tichý
Petr Tichý, a Czech jazz bassist with extensive stage and studio experience, plays, among other things, an electroacoustic bass of his own construction made by master violin maker Jiří Petlach. During his studies at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and the jazz department of the Prague Academy of Performing Arts (with professors Petr Kořínek, Jaromír Honzák and Jiří Slavík, and courses with Miroslav Vitouš) he became connected with the Prague jazz scene, where he has been active ever since.
He takes part in many multigenre projects such as trio NTS (with Michalem Nejtkem and Štěpánem Smetáčkem), Feng-jun Song a trio Puo, Třaskavá směs Franty Skláy and more. Vlastní kompoziční i zvukovou tvorbu realizuje především projektem HLASkontraBAS v duu s Ridinou Ahmedovou za kterou byli nominováni na cenu Anděl 2016 v kategorii worldmusic.
His own compositional and sound work is mainly realized by the project HLASkontraBAS in duo with Ridina Ahmedová for which they were nominated for the Anděl 2016 award in the world music category.
