2024 marks 200 years since the birth of composer Bedřich Smetana, and the entire Czech music scene celebrates the Year of Czech Music on this occasion. What is “Czech music” and how to think about it in today's globalized world? We will ask such questions during the first Music Soirée with Prague Spring, which is prepared by students of musicology at Charles University. We will talk not only about the iconic Smetana's My Homeland, which opens the festival every year, but also about Josef Suk's symphonic poem Prague, which will end the Prague Spring in 2024. Musical demonstrations will be accompanied by a discussion about publishing works by Czech authors and publishing them abroad with musicologist and managing editor of Bärenreiter publishing house Jonáš Hájek. The leading Czech soprano Kateřina Kněžíková will share her relationship with Czech music, who will play the title role of the mythical princess in the opera Libuše at two gala concerts of the Prague Spring. At the Prague Spring discussion evening at the Hybernská Campus, she will sing arias from the operas of Bedřich Smetana.
