Island is an ecosystem where, due to its isolation, there is a remarkable evolution of the local life that makes it clearly different from the surrounding mainland. In this comparison, it is possible to see a parallel with the evolution of the persona and work of Czech artist Milan Knížák who built an unusual and complex work that addresses everything important for human culture and ethics.
In the focus on Milan Knížák, we should highlight all the important positions and stages of his life as an artist and a public figure. As a prominent multimedia artist, he directly contributed to shaping the socio-cultural scene in the Czech Republic, but as a director of the eastern section of the FLUXUS group, he also enriched the rest of the world with his energetic and unrestrained displays. When we look back at the times when he was the Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague or the General Director of the National Gallery Prague, it is evident that his “phenomenon” is controversial in the eyes of both experts and the general public. At the same time, the name Knížák became a symbol or a sophisticated advertisement recognisable by many generations.
Even though the description above is crucial for understanding the artist’s value, the main purpose of the exhibition is to remind people of the artist’s versatility and his broad spectrum of work. Above all, the exhibition emphasises the works concerned with architecture, design, fashion, lifestyle, and presents a visual experience that is inspired by Milan Knížák’s book DREAMING OF ARCHITECTURE. The concept includes a presentation of a modern and timeless interior based on the thematic motifs of the artist.
The installation creates a dreamlike dwelling at a magical place, Ostrov Knížák.
